Sewing Tips for Doll Clothes
Sewing doll clothes is not too different from making clothes for regular people. There are, however, vital differences between the two. The main thing to take note when sewing doll clothes is how realistic the clothes are. Doll clothes should look like a perfect miniature version of their larger counterpart. If they either look too big or small for the doll, they’re probably done wrong.
Many types of fabrics used to make human clothes will look stiff and unruly on a doll if the clothes are not made properly. Since doll clothes are much smaller than people’s clothing, seams need to be made a lot smaller. Sometimes, you would also need to sew the garments together in a different order than that of regular clothing.
If You Are sewing a skirt and blouse or pants and shirt, begin with the skirt or pants then make the blouse and shirt. For doll dresses, begin with the top part of the dress (called bodice). Next, sew the entire front and side seams for the fabric and the lining then stitch the lining into the bodice.
The fabric needs to be considered carefully to avoid bulkiness and stiffness. In general, it is best to choose the thinnest, lightest, and most supple fabrics for your doll clothes. Silk and satin are good examples. You can find most of these in a doll clothes store. Some thick fabrics will work but will look different on smaller scale.
Aside from the type of fabric, you can also reduce the bulk of the doll clothes by using as few folds as possible. Use a serger for making hems rather than making folded hems. Using a liquid hemming solution would also be a good idea. Make the tiniest stitching you can. Stitches used on regular clothing will gap and look untidy when used for doll clothes. Don’t worry if you mess up, you can always take the garments to a doll clothes store for a professional repair job.
Generally speaking, interfacing is rarely used for doll clothes, although it can be useful at times. For instance, interfacing is used to stiffen a bustier or a sleeve bodice so that the dress does not slide down on the doll’s torso. When interfacing, most doll clothes store owners recommend using cotton, silk batiste, or something similar. This prevents the clothes from bulking.
