The Enchanting World of Dolls

A doll is a small scale figure that is fashioned to resemble human beings or animals. Though often crafted as children’s playthings in the modern world, they often served magical and religious purposes in ancient societies. The earliest dolls were probably made from readily available materials such as wood, stones, bone, and ivory. Moreover, there was probably no distinction between dolls used for spiritual purposes and dolls used as playthings in ancient societies. Indeed, in many ancient cultures, dolls were often given to children in elaborate religious rituals.

Archeological digs have unearthed countless doll-like effigies made of various materials from the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The earliest documented dolls date from the ancient civilizations of Greece, Egypt, and Rome. Children and young women were often buried with their dolls, which show how important they were to ancient peoples.

Modern doll manufacturing began in Western Europe in the 15th century. Though many dolls from the early modern period were created to amuse children, some had a more entrepreneurial function. For hundreds of years, the latest innovations in fashion were spread via “fashion dolls.” These dolls were often clothed with accurate depictions of the latest Parisian fashions and sent to the courts of Europe.

It was not until the Industrial Revolution and the discovery of new materials such as porcelain and plastic, did the mass production of dolls really take off. The art of making luxuriously crafted dolls undoubtedly reached its zenith in 19th France and Germany, when manufacturers began creating expensive, beautifully detailed fashion dolls which were meant to be the playthings of girls from wealthy families. Such dolls often had equally expensive accouterments such as doll houses, doll clothes for 18 inch doll, and other accessories.

Until the middle of the 19th century, European doll clothes for 18 inch doll were crafted predominately to represent adults. Dolls with infantile features did not appear until around 1850. However, by the end of the 19th century baby dolls or bébés overtook the doll market. Moreover, lifelike dolls made of wax were extremely popular for girls in Victorian England.

In the 20th century, affordable materials and mass production have ensured that millions of girls and boys around the world grew up playing with dolls. Many adults have also begun to collect dolls for their nostalgic, aesthetic, and financial value. Some even specialize in collecting dolls with intricate doll clothes for 18 inch doll.
